University of Nebraska athletics and its tradition of honoring athletes with varsity letters goes back as long as we can remember. Although the traditional style of the letter N varied, the standard characteristic of our varsity letter that has stood the test of time is the slab serif in all four corners of the N.

Overtime, as uniforms, branding and marketing for professional and collegiate teams and its universities became more common place, the colloquial "block N" became the official logo of Nebraska athletics.
The one common thread over the years was that there were no standards applied on how to draw the athletic N and many variations were used by the university.
The university also decided to develop an academic N which would have a similar feel to athletics, but it would be distinctively academic. The thought probably was that despite having an N, it was better to distance the academic brand from athletics.
Alumni also had its own unique version.
It made sense for the university to align themselves with other universities that unified their marks, and brands around the world that understand the value of a single mark and a decision was finally made to develop a unified mark.
Big Ten universities comparison.
